Today is an important date in the history when two incidents happened which shook the world.

Today is 11th September when two historical events occurred which shocked the whole world. One was attacked on the World Trade Centre in New York in 2001 and the other was the inspirational speech given by Swami Vivekananda.

Swami Vivekananda gave a motivational three-minute speech at Parliament of World Religions in Chicago on 11th Sept’ 93. In the speech, he introduced Hinduism to the world and also spoke on important topics such as intolerance, religion and the need to end all forms of fanaticism.  Such was the effect of the remarkable message that he was given a two-minute standing ovation. He began the speech  by addressing the audience as “Sisters and Brothers of America”

Here are excerpts from his discourse that continues to echoes in society.

*An argument in favour of religious tolerance and accommodation as against self-righteousness and bigotry as aptly illustrated by the “frog in the well” (kupamanduka) story. In substance, Vivekananda emphasised the religious pluralism embedded in Hinduism. Contrary to commonplace perception, he did not try to advocate the idea of a universal religion, not even of the unity of religious thought or practice but the idea of a common goal or destiny (human salvation) for every religious community

*The questioning of religious conversion itself, arguing that holiness, purity and charity was not the exclusive premise of any one sect or church.”

*The questioning of religious conversion itself, arguing that holiness, purity and charity was not the exclusive premise of any one sect or church.”

“Sectarianism, bigotry, and its horrible descendant, fanaticism, have long possessed this beautiful earth. They have filled the earth with violence, drenched it often and often with human blood, destroyed civilization and sent whole nations to despair. Had it not been for these horrible demons, human society would be far more advanced than it is now. But their time comes; and I fervently hope that the bell that tolled this morning in honour of this convention may be the death-knell of all fanaticism, of all persecutions with the sword or with the pen, and of all uncharitable feelings between persons wending their way to the same goal.”

The second historical movement which took place on the same date but the different year was the Terrorist attack on the World Trade Centre in New York in 2001. Two of the planes were flown into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City while a third plane hit the Pentagon just outside Washington, D.C.

18 years today people woke up to a news which shook the whole world and witnessed the wrath of terrorism as almost 3,000 people went to sleep for the final time.

Post the attack it become clear that the hijackers were Islamic terrorists from Saudi Arabia and was financed by the al Qaeda terrorist organization of Saudi fugitive Osama bin Laden, they were allegedly acting in retaliation for America’s support of Israel, its involvement in the Persian Gulf War and its continued military presence in the Middle East.

Oval Office released an official statement saying that “Terrorist attacks can shake the foundations of our biggest buildings, but they cannot touch the foundation of America. These acts shatter steel, but they cannot dent the steel of American resolve. We will make no distinction between the terrorists who committed these acts and those who harbour them.”

ISRO failure to successfully land Chandrayaan-2 lander Vikram on Moon has inspired millions of Indians.

Vikram Sarabhai has played a crucial role in establishing of Indian National Committee for Space Research, ISRO was established in 1962. He magnificently influenced the Indian government of the importance of a space program after the Russian Sputnik launch. On his 100th Birth Anniversary, Prime Minister Narendra Modi Ji had paid homage to the Father of the Indian space program, and reminded the nation about his vision helped India become a major science and technology hub in the world.

In the video Message PM Narendra Modi Ji had quoted saying, “He used to say that people of India must not hesitate to use the latest technology to solve problems faced by the society. It was this vision of Dr. Sarabhai which played an important role in making India a major player in the field of science and technology. “We are now making use of space technology and nuclear technology for the benefit of common men. Dr Sarabhai gave a new direction to our space and nuclear programs. We can say that the rocket launched by him at Thumba has now taken different forms to help us reach to the Moon and Mars.”

Chandrayaan-2 is a very multifaceted and evolutionary step for our country. The mission was one of its kind as ISRO was taken a big leap by launching a new lunar mission the Chandrayaan 2 and in doing so taking India where no nation has gone before – the Moon’s South Polar Region. One of the main purposes of the project is to discover the space and inspire the future generation to explore the world of sciences.

The whole nation was glued to the television set in the early hours of Saturday to know that status of the mission by hit a rough patch when lander lost communication with ground stations during its final descent. In the very last stages, the Vikram Lander lost contact with the ground, just 2.1 km from the lunar surface. The Indian Space Research Organisation released a statement and was quoted saying that, “The success criteria were defined for each and every phase of the mission and till date 90 to 95% of the mission objectives have been accomplished and will continue to contribute to Lunar science, notwithstanding the loss of communication with the Lander,”

Post the plan not making its desired result not going as its was planned led to ISRO Chairman K Sivan was inconsolable post-hearing the inspirational speech by PM Modi ji who applauded scientist hard work and praised their “resilience and tenacity”. During his interaction with the scientist at the ISRO Control Centre in Bengaluru and was quoted saying that, “India is with you! You are exceptional professionals who have made an incredible contribution to national progress”.

This is not the first time an Indian space mission did not go as plan. Former President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam gave an inspirational talk on how to handle failure while referring to the 1979 SLV-3 mission crash and was quoted saying, “The year was 1979. I was the project director. My mission was to put the satellite in the orbit. Thousands of people worked for nearly 10 years. I have reached Sriharikota and it is in the launch pad. The countdown was going on T minus 4 minutes, T minus 3 minutes, T minus 2 minutes, T minus 1 minute, T minus 40 seconds. And the computer put it on hold, don’t launch it. I am the mission director, I have to make a decision.”

Kalam Saab also recalled the incident when then Isro chief Satish Dhawan held a press conference along with him to break the news of the mission failure to the nation and was quoted saying that ‘Dear friends, we have failed today. I want to support my technologists, my scientists, my staff, so that next year they succeed. He took the whole blame on himself despite criticisms. He took all the blame and assured them that next year we would succeed because his team was a very good one.”

The Indian Space Research Organisation has been working very hard trying to figure out what happened to the Chandrayaan-2 lander and managed to locate Vikram on the lunar surface. Mylswamy Annadurai during a recent interaction with ANI was quoted saying that, “As we have located the lander on the lunar surface, we now have to establish contact with it. The place, where the lander alighted is expected to be not conducive enough for the lander to soft-land. There may be some obstacles, which could have been stopping us from establishing the connection”

“Isro could manage to raise “one-way” communication with Vikram, but it would not last more than 5-10 minutes. “There is always a two-way communication between the orbiter and lander, but we can attempt to communicate through one way… It is a tricky situation but our scientists are capable enough to handle it.”

Heartiest congratulations to our scientists at #ISRO for a phenomenal achievement…your work and huge dedication make us proud. We will rise again! #JaiHind

Post retiring from the sport, Jonty on a regular interval can be seen interacting with the budding cricketer and giving them valuable insights. These days South African cricketer along with Ryan Maroon is conducting training sessions in Sri Lanka in which we can see 50-year old was involved in a drill where he captivated with his extreme fielding routine.
Ryan Maroon uploaded the video of the session and wrote, “He maybe 50 years old but he still has it! Been another amazing chapter mentoring and coaching 500 plus amazingly talented and gifted cricketers over this past week in Colombo – Kandy – Negombo with ama sports”.

Alex Nishantha who is the coordinator of the program was quoted saying that, “This will be the first time Jonty (Rhodes) will come on such a mission to Sri Lanka. He has been a part of the Sri Lanka coaching unit in the recent past, but during the upcoming camps, he will mostly focus on youngsters, while we also receive inquiries from First Class cricketers as well. He will be willing to have anybody on board, who are eager to learn and perfect their skills”.

Rhodes had recently been in the news for applying for the role of India’s fielding coach, but he was not in the top three, with R Sridhar retaining his position. The selection committee revealed that Sridhar had pitched in with a good performance in his tenure, and replacing him would have been harsh.

Recently South African legend had applied for the role of India’s fielding coach role but his name did not feature in the 3-man shortlist as MSK Prasad-led selection which was met with a lot of criticism amongst the fans and cricket fraternity alike. But he took not been selected in his stride and was quoted saying that “I am sure my interview was not as good as the one with the incumbent coach because he has been there for the last couple of years. Players have worked with a plan. And you can see the progress as it just doesn’t happen. I am expecting that from an interview point of view – he kicked my butt.”

This season (2019 – 2020) started on a good note with an emphatic 4-0 drubbing of Chelsea. But post that everything went downfall from the managers when Man United had been held to a 1-1 draw at Wolves and were defeated to Crystal Palace at home last Saturday. The major concern is penalties not been converting into goals by the top players such as Paul Pogba at Wolves and Marcus Rashford at home to Palace.

Wish best of luck to Manchester United in the absence of Anthony Martial and Luke Shaw for Saturday’s Premier League trip to Southampton.
