Shakib Al Hasan has created a name in the cricket fraternity and is recognised as one of the best All-rounders in the world. He also holds rare feet for being ranked first as an all-rounder in the One Day International (ODI) format for 10 years. He is a supremely gifted talent and plays across all the format. He made his ODI Debut in 2006 as a bowler but soon started honing his batting skills and his records are proof of it. Bangladeshi Cricketer and is one of the best all-rounders in cricket is not only the highest run-scorer but also the highest wicket-taker for Bangladesh in the World Cup. He is also the only cricketer to score 1000 runs and to take 30 wickets in the World Cup. At the 2019 Cricket World Cup, Shakib became the first cricketer to score 600 runs and take 10 wickets in a single World Cup.
Shakib Al Hasan was handed a two-year ban (one year suspended) by the International Cricket Council (ICC) after he acknowledged numerous attempt to report corrupt approaches made to him. The International Cricket Council made the WhatsApp chat between Bangladesh Cricket Captain and alleged bookie Deepak Aggarwal on their official website. Shakib Al Hasan has admitted to the ICC’s Anti-Corruption Unit that “On 19 January 2018, I received a WhatsApp message from Mr Aggarwal congratulating me for being named man of the match in that day’s game. Mr Aggarwal followed this message with a message saying ‘do we work in this or I wait till the IPL’.”
The reference to ‘work’ in this message was a reference to him providing Inside Information to Mr Aggarwal. He did not report this contact from Mr Aggarwal to the ACU or any other anti-corruption authority.”
The said interaction between Shakib and bookie Deepak Aggarwal took place during Bangladesh’s tri-series with Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe in January 2018. The second time the two had an interaction in which the bookie made another approach to him to provide him with Inside Information, saying “Bro anything in this series?” The report revealed that Shakib was approached by the same bookie during the Indian Premier League (IPL) before a match between SunRisers Hyderabad and Kings XI Punjab in 2018. “He received a WhatsApp message from Mr Aggarwal that day asking him whether a particular player was going to be playing in the game that day,” the ICC said in its report.
Bangladesh Cricket Board chief Nazmul Hassan released an official statement, “I want to state something clearly and that is that neither I nor anyone from the BCB knew anything about the investigation, which has been going on from January. I don’t deny that I was angry at him for not reporting the issue but at the same time we are pleased that he has cooperated fully with the ICC’s ACU (Anti-Corruption Unit) and has pledged his commitment to its education programme.”
The shocking development has come at the very crucial time as the Bangladesh Team are all set the tour of India commencing from 3rd November. Shakib was supposed to captain the team in three T20s and two Tests.
In the absence of Shakib Al Hasan, Mahmudullah Riyad and Mominul Haque will be leading that Bangladesh’s T20 and Test squads. The president of BCBB, Nazmul Hassan was quoted saying that, “I have always said that we don’t have substitutes for two players – Mashrafe (ODI captain) as a captain and Shakib as a player. He is one of the best players in the world. Him not being able to play is a real shock. We have a very important series in front of us. We are playing our first full series in India and ICC Test Championship is beginning. The planning behind everything was done with Shakib in mind.”
Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina also shared her view on ban given to Shakib Al Hasan and stated that the country’s cricket board will stand by their Test and T20I captain in this tough time. “It’s clear that Shakib has made a mistake and he’s realised that. There’s nothing much the government can do about the ICC’s decision but BCB will stand by him.”
